An Unbreakable Spirit
Gregory Smith defied the odds to build a life of joy. His story has a new voice now.
Doctors gave him 25 years. He gave them a lifetime of defiance.
In our November feature, Defying the Odds, we introduced Gregory Smith and his book, Stronger Than Bones: An Unbreakable Life with Brittle Bones. We explored the reality of his journey and the medical predictions he shattered simply by continuing to lead, advocate, and thrive.
The world might tell you to give up, but compassion for oneself and others is the ultimate fuel for survival.
Nearly seven decades since a diagnosis of rare Type III Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) was supposed to define his limits, Greg is proving that a “brittle” body can house an unbreakable spirit. From navigating over 200 fractures to building a joyful life complete with a happy marriage and two loyal dogs, Greg has become the role model for a generation of children with OI.
Some stories are meant to be heard as much as they are read.
We are excited to share that Stronger Than Bone has officially been released as an audiobook by Compassiviste Publishing.
My life isn’t a story about what was broken; it’s a story about what was built. I want people to see that a diagnosis can be the start of a beautiful, full life, not the end of one.
The Mission: Health Awareness
While Greg’s physical journey is defined by OI, his life’s work is defined by awareness.
By bringing his story into an audio format, Greg is advancing his message of resilience to reach a wider audience. Including those in the rare disease community who may find audio more accessible, or those who find strength in a narrative during a hospital stay or a morning commute.
It’s a meaningful next step in his mission: create an environment where no one facing a daunting diagnosis feels invisible or unheard.

The Power of Health Awareness
Greg’s book serves as a vital tool for visibility in the rare disease space.
The Impact of Visibility: Raising awareness reduces the “diagnostic odyssey” for many families. When stories like Greg’s are shared, it helps others recognize symptoms and seek support earlier.
Representation Matters: For the small population of children living with OI, seeing a model of a happy, full, “normal” adult life is life-changing. It shifts the narrative from “medical tragedy” to “human possibility.”
Breaking the Silence: Public awareness is the first step toward empathy. By sharing the day-to-day reality of his 200+ fractures, Greg helps the world understand the strength required to navigate a world not built for brittle bones.
Community Spotlight: Celebrate with Greg in Collegeville
